Summer is a comin'
May 2007
D. Cole

How many homeschooling parents are counting down the days left in the school year?  I
must confess I have a time or two (or twelve).  I look forward to getting some extra
projects done around the house and a little "mom time" in the mornings.

Yes, it is good for a while.  However, before too long I seem to miss the routine of our
"school time" and the structure and flow that goes with it.  Then the TV starts getting left
on too long and the young hands in our home lack constructive things to do.  When that
happens it usually is not good for the harmony of the family.  Meaning, the natives start to
get restless and Mom's nerves start to fray.

So this summer I am planning to give my children something to do each day.  Nothing too
"schoolish" lest my true plans get discovered and the children feel deprived of their
summer break.  Nothing too long either or it will get tiresome.

Perhaps I get some new games so they can sharpen some logic and thinking skills.  The craft
items will need to be stocked.  A trip to the library every now and then will be good too.  Of
course I can't forget to have some read aloud time too.

Sounds like I am planning summer school.  Shhhh!  Don't tell my children!  I always tell them
I am "the meanest Mommy in the whole wide world" but, I don't want them to actually
believe it.

Have a happy summer!
